To get a top 10 ranking is indeed a thankless task. I'd advise to concentrate on long tail keywords. These are easy to get top 10 rankings for. But to get your main keywords - mine is 'solar energy' - which is ultra competitive will take a lot of time and hard work. I currently occupy number 30-40 for that.
